Book Design

When prospective author Peter Forguson initially approached me in 2016 about his idea for an architectural coffee table book featuring houses designed in the Modernist style in the Detroit area, I didn't know what to say. Peter wanted me to come and work with him and compose the design for the book. However, even being a seasoned graphic designer, I had to admit the design of a large book like that I had never worked on before. I was excited and intrigued about the project. I quickly learned there were several steps to successful book design. Typography, illustrations, and images were all elements I was very accustomed to working with—just not on this large of a scale. Each step in designing a hardcover book requires a blend of artistic vision and practical considerations. By carefully planning and executing each aspect, defining the book's purpose and audience, and placing images thoughtfully to complement the text and layout—you can create a visually compelling and successful book.

Visitors to Detroit may not realize what residents of the Motor City have known for decades: metropolitan Detroit is a stunning showcase of mid-century modern houses. Endowed with old growth trees, rolling topography and miles of lakefront, the Detroit area inspired talented architects and their progressive clients to create uniquely beautiful residences that were seamlessly integrated with lush natural surroundings. Author Peter Forguson and graphic designer Marla Meltzer collaborated in the creation of this highly acclaimed, 300-page, Modernist residential architectural coffee table book showcasing houses in Metro-Detroit.

Initially published in 2022, and received with superb reviews, they are currently working together on a second edition of Detroit Modern which is set for release in December of 2024. Additionally, Meltzer and Forguson are in the late stages of the creation of a subsequent book on Modernist residential architecture highlighting Michigan's beautiful lower peninsula. The title of the upcoming book is Contemporary Michigan: Iconic Houses at the Epicenter of Modernism. This forthcoming book is currently available for pre-sale, and like the second edition of Detroit Modern, it is also due for publication release in December of 2024.
